Hair loss can have distressing effects on your appearance — but even worse, it can erode your self-confidence and make you feel uncomfortable in your own body.
At International Hair Institute, we understand how frustrating and demoralizing hair loss can be, and how it can affect your mental health and overall well-being.
Many people struggle with hair loss today: At least 8 in 10 men experience some degree of hair thinning before age 50. Hormones are often an underlying cause of hair loss, but that doesn’t mean you’re helpless in this battle. You’re not alone, and we can help.
Below, we explain how hormones and hair loss are related and talk about some of your treatment options.
The Hormones Behind Hair Loss
Multiple factors may contribute to hair loss in men, and there are many varieties of hair loss. The most common, androgenic alopecia (male pattern hair loss) usually occurs on the top and front areas of your scalp, leading to a receding hairline over time.
Most hair loss in men is related to androgenic alopecia, which is in turn often related to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Androgenic alopecia hair loss DHT is derived from testosterone, but it’s about 10 times stronger. High DHT activity can shrink your hair follicles and shorten the hair’s growth phase, resulting in hair loss.
In addition, many men inherit unusually sensitive hair follicles, due to variations in the gene that controls androgen reception. Androgen receptor (AR) proteins normally bind with testosterone and DHT to help stimulate hair growth. However, if your AR gene makes you particularly sensitive to DHT, it can increase your risk of hair loss further.
Testosterone and DHT start circulating through the blood during teenage years in men. So, the hair loss process can start early in life. However, many men don’t notice it until they’ve lost around half of their hair.
Women can also experience hair loss due to hormonal changes. For instance, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) leads to elevated DHT levels and can cause hair loss. Additionally, testosterone-secreting tumors and a decline in estrogen, especially during menopause, may contribute to female hair loss.
