FUE Hair Transplant in Chicago, IL

Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, is a technique for extracting individual follicular units from the patient’s donor area one at a time. We don’t need to remove a strip from the back of the head when using the FUE method, so there will be no linear scar in the donor area. The end result is natural.

FUT vs FUE Hair Transplant

FUE, like FUT, has an amazing and completely natural appearance. Both procedures ensure that the hair transplant result is natural and permanent. Register for a consultation so that we can determine which procedure is best for you.

FUE (follicular unit extraction) is a highly successful hair transplant procedure that involves taking individual follicles from the back of the head and then reimplanting this hair in another area that has experienced hair loss. Many men and women have taken advantage of this technique to address a receding hairline, thinning hair, or premature balding.

How FUE Is Performed

Follicular unit extraction ChicagoThe procedure begins by excising individual follicles from a donor area of the scalp, on the back and sides where the hair is not sensitive to the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The follicles are excised one at a time, with a very small punch. Enough follicles are excised to cover the recipient area where hair is lacking.

Later a very small blade, usually 0.8 to 1mm, is used to make tiny incisions in the recipient area where the follicles are to be inserted. Care is taken with the incision placement so that the spacing, exit angle, and direction of the hair growth corresponds with the patient’s natural hair pattern.

Because the scalp is numbed with a local anesthetic, the procedure is not uncomfortable. While patients may experience some discomfort after the procedure, this should be easily managed with pain medication and should subside within a day or two.

Benefits of FUE Hair Transplants

FUE has become the most popular hair transplant approach for patients in Chicago and across the country because it harvests individual follicles rather than an entire strip from the scalp.

Some of the advantages of FUE include:

  • Scarring manifests in the form of small dots, unlike the FUT technique, which is linear
  • Results that last indefinitely
  • Safe procedure with low complication rate
  • Easier and faster recovery with no sutures to remove and no tightness in the donor area of the scalp
  • Donor areas generally heal in two or three days

During a consultation, the team at International Hair Institute discusses both the FUE and FUT methods and advises which procedure will produce the best results for each individual patient.

Hair Transplant Results

FUE ChicagoUnfortunately, hair transplant results are not instantaneous. The transplanted hair shafts fall out a few weeks after the procedure but then grow back in two to six months. The hairs are not on a light switch, so they do not all regrow at the same time. The full end result of any hair restoration procedure will not be realized for six to 12 months. The good news is that results achieved with FUE are permanent and should last a lifetime.

FUE for Beard Transplant

Men who have trouble growing facial hair or find their beard to be too thin or patchy can utilize the FUE hair transplant method to grow natural-looking facial hair.

FUE Costs

The total cost for FUE differs from one patient to another, with the biggest factors being the size of the areas being treated and the amount of follicles that are transferred to achieve the desired look. International Hair Institute can provide a complete quote following a consultation. To help patients pay for hair transplant, we accept financing plans through CareCredit, a leading medical lender.
